John Michie was from Strathdon, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. He was born in 1685 and married Mary Garth.  His younger brother, William Michie, was the founder of Michie Tavern.  John was an officer in the Virginia Revolutionary militia.  He was a prominent Green Springs land holder and vestryman in the Fredericksville parish.

John was known as “Scotch John.”  He purchased the Riverview property in 1730-31.  It totaled 1440 acres near the South Anna River between Beaver and Harris Creeks.  Riverview Farm is in Louisa county, Virginia.

John married Sarah Garth about 1728 . It is thought that his son, John Michie, born in 1734 is the father of Mary Thomas Smith’s mother, Sarah Michie.
John Michie died at age 92 in Albemarle County in 1777, one year after an independent Virginia declared itself free of British Crown rule. He owned approximately 10,600 acres of land located in Louisa and Albemarle counties which was divided among his living sons.  At the time of his death, he owned at least 11 slaves all of whom were passed on to his adult children or grandchildren along with his other material possessions.
John Michie  arrived in Colonial Virginia penniless and convicted of treason as a result of his participation in the failed Jacobite Revolt of 1715.
The original Michie home was reconstructed and a dedication was held in November 2013.
